About

A gardening blog focused on growing in Shetland and the realities of gardening at 60 degrees North. This is a blog about growing in Shetland and what it means to build greater resilience on an island.

I have been growing my own food for quite some time and I am really interested in self sufficiency and local food systems. Shetland has always had to make the most of what it can produce. Today, an unstable climate, rising costs and an increasingly uncertain geopolitical landscape raise new questions about food security and how dependent island communities should be on long supply chains.

Im exploring what can be grown here and how traditional knowledge, modern growing methods and local food production could contribute to a more resilient future.

This blog covers vegetables, herbs, flowers, indoor growing, foraging, seasonal gardening and the practical realities of growing at 60 degrees North – alongside the wider questions of food, climate and island resilience.
